Clay Art Center Celebrates 11th Year of Empty Bowls

POSTED: JANUARY 2012

At any given day you can walk into the Clay Art Center and find artists and students immersed in sculpting figures, throwing on the wheel and just simply absorbed in a creative clay journey. But during the month of January they are solely focused on making BOWLS for their annual fundraiser entitled EMPTY BOWLS to benefit the Port Chester interfaith soup kitchens.

For the past 11 years Clay Art Center and the Rye Presbyterian Church Youth Group has a provided a valuable community service by hosting an annual Empty Bowls event and thereby raising awareness about hunger. Each year artists and students donate their time and energy to create bowls, which are then glazed, fired and sold at the Empty Bowls event.

Reena Kashyap and Debbie Mawhinney both of Rye co-chair the event along with Reverend Dan Love of the Rye Presbyterian Youth Group. Together, along with a host of volunteers, they have raised over $55,000 over the last eleven years. The fundraiser brings the youth to the center twice in January and they all participate in creating bowls. The center will be hosting a “Come make a Bowl Day” on Saturday, January 7th from 1:30 – 4pm, which is open to anyone who wants to come and help.

Then on Sunday, January 29th, 11am at Rye Presbyterian Church, the youth group along with the help of the Empty Bowls Committee members will set up all the bowls and serve a simple meal of donated bread and soup. The community is then invited to purchase the handmade bowls. Last year they raised $5000 which benefited the local interfaith soup kitchens.

Clay Art Center is located at 40 Beech Street, Port Chester. For more information contact 914-937-2047 .Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am-4pm or by appointment.
