Academic Quiz Bowl Team Competes

Five seniors from Harrison High School defeated Pearl River High School in the first round of “The Challenge” on Wednesday, December 21 at 6:30pm on the MSG Varsity network.

Twenty-five students tried out for the team and the five who competed were selected after several rounds of intense competition that included numerous written and oral assessments. The team of Emma Adler, Jacob Seidman, Robert Tiburzi, Rachel Oestreicher, and Daniel Glass practice twice a week under the direction of advisors Heath Kaplan and Rachel Voss.

“We have been putting in a lot of work and hope to see this program grow at Harrison High School,” said Kaplan. “Our goal is to expand the team so that we can enter Quiz Bowl tournaments around the tri-state area.”

Kaplan also said the team is always looking for sparring partners, having battled five HHS teachers recently and only loosing by a few points. The team is planning another practice match against the teams’ own parents.

Should the Quiz Bowl team prevail against Pearl River, they would compete again February 16, 2012.

“We have a great team and I believe we have the ability and drive to advance in this competition,” said Kaplan.
