Castelli Steers First Bill Through Assembly

Assemblyman Robert J Castelli (R, I, C-Goldens Bridge) has announced that his first prime-sponsored legislation was passed on June 15th as the Assembly voted 98 to 1. The bill is designed to provide significant savings for Harrison by bestowing court attendants the status of peace officers.
“This bill will result in real savings for the Town and Village of Harrison by allowing employees serving as court attendants to function as peace officers while they are working in the local court system,” Castelli said. “In these tough economic times, I am pleased that my first bill to pass the Assembly is one that will provide our local governments with needed relief.”

The purpose of the legislation, Assembly Bill A10761A, is to allow Harrison to use certain employees other than police officers as uniformed court aides in its courts. This will help save Harrison both time and money and make certain that there are enough properly trained professionals staffing Harrison’s courts. The Senate version, Senate Bill S5913A, is sponsored by Senator Suzi Oppenheimer and is currently before the Senate Codes Committee.

“By working in a bipartisan manner, I was able to pass legislation that will help lower local government costs, which have a direct impact on property taxes,” Castelli said. “To pass a responsible budget this year, I will continue to reach out to my colleagues on the other side of the aisle and believe we all must redouble our efforts and put partisan politics behind us so we can complete the people’s work.”

Assemblyman Castelli, a nationally recognized expert and former professor of Criminal Justice and member of the New York State Police, said that the volume of people served by the courts in Harrison necessitate significant security measures to insure the proper administration of justice, and conveying peace officer status to court attendants would advance that security for justices, attorneys, defendants, and the general public.
